"A
brain injury
affects the entire family"
|
A brain
injury is a trauma for both the afflicted individual and the family
members. Family members know this the day they are notified that
a loved one
spouse, child, relative
is in a coma or
has been diagnosed with ABI. Traumatic waves radiate out, slowly,
to extended family members and friends so that everyone involved
is seriously affected.
The mission of the Brain Injury Association of Santa Barbara is
to serve the ABI survivor and his/her surrounding social and support
systems --- spouses, children, siblings, friends, relatives in an
atmosphere of hope, understanding and caring.
We offer an extended educational and support program for families
and everyone intimately connected to a person with ABI.
Family
Support Group
The
Support Group meets every Tuesday, from 12 to 1pm, at Jodi House.
If you want to bring a family member with TBI with you, there are
parallel activities available for him/her. Also, plan to have lunch
with us (provided).
Family
Support Series
In
addition to the family group, we also bring lecturers from the community
to talk about topics of interest to our members. This year, the
theme is "Stress, its harmful effects and ways of reducing
them". Monthly meetings are generally in the early evening
and snacks are provided. The whole family and caregivers are invited
and encouraged to attend. Check Jodi House's calendar
for current schedule. This program is made possible thanks to a
grant from the RNR Foundation.
Family
Case Management and Needs Assessment
Understanding
the new injury, learning how to relate to the injured loved one
and keeping tabs on all the regular activities of a household can
be, not surprisingly, challenging. To help families develop healthy
strategies to deal with the recovering road ahead, our case management
team is available for private consultations and counseling sessions
with family members. Call 805 563-2882 for an appointment.
